I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I tutored mainly in math, but I also helped with all of their homework and helped them study for tests. I found it to be an excellent learning experience for me as well as the student. Hidden Talents Tutoring

My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. Learning can be hard work at times, but it should be satisfying.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a degree in computer science, I started tutoring in the Academic Skills Center at UWEC and discover ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. In addition, the teacher needs to ensure the student is motivated to learn by providing materials and methods that are of interest to the student, and match his/her learning style.
From 1980-1989 I worked as a Program Coordinator for a Developmental Achievement Center for mentally handicapped adults. My re ... read more

My teaching method is to use the principle approach. Each academic subject has foundational principles that make up that subject’s core. To master a subject, a student must understand these principles and then see them expand as the student progresses through a subject. I believe students can be taught problem-solving skills, organizational skills and character-building principles through every subject. Teaching is a gift that I have been given and I want to continue using it to make a difference in my students.
For thirty-seven years I have been involved in education. Thirty-three of those years has been as a principal/teacher in private multi-grade classrooms. I have been able to successfully teach differing grade levels and subjects because of a strong liberal arts background afforded me in obtaining my BA and M.Ed. This background has enabled me to coach students who hav ... read more
