I have worked with children since I was 12 when I would babysit for relatives and neighbors. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science in Education specializing in Emotional Impairments and Learning Disabilities. I completed two years of practicum teaching covering all age ranges and learning styles while taking Special Education courses through Western. This past year I did two internships in the Kalamazoo Public School District. I have coached for the Special Olympics basketball program and participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way. As you can see from my experience, working with children has long been a passion of mine, and is ultimately my career goal. I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.
