A Little Bit About Me...

I have a PhD with a major in psychology and a minor in cell biology. I have taught college courses ranging from developmental math to graduate neuroscience. One of my research areas was mathematical models of behavior; therefore, I have a strong background in statistics and math. I have published approximately 30 research papers and have made many more research presentations. When teaching a math lesson I begin by going over skills already mastered that lead to the lesson at hand. After teaching the new material I then have the student try a similar problem while I watch. If necessary I coach them along, pointing out any problem areas. Then I require the student to try more of the same type of problems until he or she has mastered the new material. It's very important to me that the student understand what he or she is doing and why it works. In other words, I don't just teach them how to do individual problems.
I have enjoyed teaching in private schools of and on for the last 22 years. I like starting with the given information and stepping through the processes to solve a problem. Reminding them of, or even showing them, the rules, properties, and examples in the book. I normally try to find the method that best works with each pupil, then highlight on that. I also make sure not to do the work for the student. I will sometimes come up with a similar problem to work through so they can see what's really going on within the problem.
I have tutored Algebra through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics for the last three years. 1.5 years at both Wichita State University and Washburn University. I'm currently working on a second Bachelors degree in mathematics, but this time with an emphasis in Actuarial Science. This mixes calculus, algebra, and statistics, along with some business classes, into one, keeping them fresh in my mind.

I taught many different classes of Mathematics, some were individualized. I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and try to be kind to all people I work with and teach academic material to. I try to teach Mathematics in the best way for each student to learn the most from the instruction.
I have taught General Math in Junior High, Algebra and Geometry in Junior High and High School, Introduction to Mathematics, and three different Algebra courses in Junior College.
