A Little Bit About Me...

I am a higher education professional who has come to believe that the best way to impact students is to return to teaching. I have a long-standing interest in the philosophy of teaching. I am particularly impressed by "deep learning," a movement that emphasizes critical thinking and inquiry at all levels of teaching. I also believe in high expectations combined with a strong support system, and a common sense approach to the subject matter. I have come to believe that much "teaching" is nothing more than giving students the illusion that they have learned something; this is evidenced by the "cram and regurgitate" approach often taken by students. In my view, this approach is not true teaching or true learning.

I graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas with a degree in Communications (emphasis in Journalism) along with minors in Religion and Youth Ministry. While in college, I was a member of the yearbook staff as well as serving as an editor in various capacities for the newspaper. I also was selected by my newspaper advisor to serve as a writing mentor for a United Methodist publication. Throughout my academic career at Southwestern, I regularly was approached by my peers to edit their essays and offer any guidance or suggestions to improve their assignment.

As a native French speaker who graduated from the University of Kansas with a Master in Urban Planning and a BA in Political Science. I have tutored students in French and English as a second language. Prior to obtaining my BA, I tutored high school students for a year in Kansas City. I can relate to students struggling to learn a language as I did when I started learning English, which turned out to be quite challenging for me. I decided to spend a year abroad and learn English as an exchange student
