I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst. I enjoy working with students. It seems that, in most cases, tutoring is essentially a confidence-builiding exercise. Yes, it's anout instructional leadership, but it's more about showing a student they can really achieve what they're setting out to do. I really enjoy showing students that they know the solution; it's just about learning how to properly express it. And if they don't know the solution, it's about properly learning it in order to express it.

I have tutored students in reading programs from first grade to the High School Equivalency program. I also have a B.S. in broadcast journalism and currently am a literacy teacher in the fifth grade at LaFollette Elementary School in Campbell County. I currently tutor a fifth grade student and a first grade student after school but have plenty of time to add to my schedule.
I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.
My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
