I have an Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor degree in Mathematics Education. I was a math tutor and math teaching assistant at Daemen College. I completed two student teaching placements in mathematics classrooms during my education. I also completed a volunteer experience at Seneca Babcock Preschool where I aided the teacher in helping the children learn colors and numbers. When I was a senior in high school, I taught Spanish to 2nd graders for a semester long project.
Teaching is such a rewarding experience. It is an amazing feeling when you help a student learn something that they previously had been struggling with. My goal is to help the student by becoming interested in the material. If the student is interested in the material, they will have a better chance of learning it. Since a classroom is filled with students who have different learning styles as described by Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, I use a variety of ways to teach. Lectures are done through power point presentations, along with worksheets and handouts. Hands-on has been used in anatomy and physiology classes. Adult learners bring a lot of experiences to the classroom, and sharing and discussing brings a different perspective. Role playing helps students to look at a situation for another's point of reference. During my junior year of undergraduate work, I was contacted by a professor and asked to become an English tutor intern for my fellow students and visiting exchange students from Aichi, Japan. I was told that this hands-on tutoring would also coincide with an upper level English class, a class in which permission of its instructor, the English department and recommendations from other professors were all required.
