My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! The goose-bumps I get when I see the 'lightbulb' of recognition turn on in a student's eyes remains my reason for wanting to share the pursuit of knowledge with everyone! A Little Bit About Me...

After I earned my BFA, I started working towards my Master of Art in Art History. I have an understanding of most studio art forms and extensive knowledge of Art History. When I started working on my thesis, I joined the Minnesota Reading Corps, and have been teaching early literacy ever since. For the last three years, I have been working in Head Start classes, preparing children for kindergarten. I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way.
