A Little Bit About Me...

I begin teaching students after assessing their needs and experiences. My students are active learners as I instruct with games, music, and art. Students are engaged because the material I use relates to their level of development and life experiences. When students are engaged learning is enjoyable. Positive behavior supports include appropriate praise for specific tasks and affirmation for accomplishments. It is rewarding teaching children, observing their academic growth, and being a part of their discoveries in learning.
With a BA in Liberal studies my excellent writing skills complimented the thesis I wrote as a Masters of Science in Education student, and I grew as a teacher of reading when I researched strategies that would increase the academic success of a struggling first grade student learning to read. I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including a thirty-page research paper, and this experience made me a better writer (and eventually, a better teacher). After graduating, I worked at a tutoring center for over a year, teaching English and history to K-12 students and math to K-6 students. I also prepared students for AP history tests and the reading and writing components of the SAT. My professional responsibilities included devising lesson plans, assigning homework, grading essays, writing progress reports, and running a debate club for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.
