Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information.
