A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the laboratory of Prof. F. Peter Guengerich at Vanderbilt University. I am seeking a teaching position near my family in Minnesota. I was a chemistry tutor in college for two years and I have spent a great deal of time informally teaching in the laboratory in graduate school. In addition to teaching one semester at the local community college, I also mentored two graduate students in our laboratory.
My approach to teaching science is to begin by applying the basic principles of biology and chemistry to everyday life. I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. I was a teachers aid at the University of Minnesota for three years in the anatomy department. I was a the lead embalmer for the University and worked for the Anatomy bequest program. I was licensed in mortuary science in 2007 and have been working as a funeral director and Retail manager for the past three years.
I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi I was a teaching assistant for a College Skills class and also a year long tutor at Oxford High School in pre-algebra. After graduating from the University of Mississippi I lived in Seoul, South Korea and taught students ages 5-11 English as a Second Language, including math and social studies. Upon returning to the United States I began working on my master's degree in TESL and I've also had the opportunity to teach 3 credit bearing college courses from 2009 to current. I am qualified to tutor pre-calculus and science as I received an associate of science degree where I completed Calculus II, Organic Chemistry and Genetics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. I find it helpful to use processes students are familiar with and expand upon that knowledge. I am a firm believer in showing why something works the way it does, not just showing the solution. This process, along with patience and understanding, has been useful my past experience and I believe it will be in the future as well.
