I am firm, fair, and friendly. I adapt lessons to the student's learning style, bearing in mind what the student needs for success in the classroom. I make learning fun.
In 2000 I volunteered in the local high school's journalism class because of my passion for writing. The following year I was offered a position as yearbook adviser, and I further developed my skills with high school students. Since 2004 I have been a private tutor, teaching all elementary subjects as well as most middle school and high school curriculum. In 2005 I began teaching annual writing workshops at Simpson College for 6th - 12th grade students. In 2006 I attended substitute teacher training, and I began substitute teaching in 2009. I also had the privilege of instructing college students in a Volunteer Income Tax site this year.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been successful at teaching children to understand and believe that they can learn anything from hitting a baseball to doing algebra. Each child learns differently, as I have learned from my own children. Starting slowly and building on the fundamentals will open the child's eyes and give them the confidence to succeed. Children will learn if the teacher is patient and allows the child to see themselves as successful on their own. It is very important to build their self image and show them there is nothing that can't accomplish on their own. Personally, I am very patient, creative and encouraging.

My experience includes 14.5 years as a mom tutoring my own children, two semesters of field observation in Elementary School and High School Math, and AAS degree in Accounting from DMACC in 2002, and currently earning (2011) my BS degree in Elementary Education with a Math endorsement at Simpson College.
My teaching style is a mix of traditional and progressive. Traditional because I believe students need a solid foundation of core knowledge to prepare them for future learning. Progressive, because I believe facts should not only be taught in bits and pieces, but should be put into a meaningful context that the student can understand.
