My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.

If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I have substitute taught for two years in the Superior, WI school district. Most of that has been at the HS and MS levels. I have also substituted at Marshall School as well as ISD 709 in Duluth as a special ed paraprofessional. My experience there is principally at Morgan Park MS in the autism classroom. I have successfully tutored two students in Algebra, one is now a certified teacher in the state of Minnesota.
I am patient and easygoing. I have two special needs children and my experience with them helps me to be understanding. I try to empbhasize learning the formulas that we use to solvbe the problems.
