Everyone can learn - it just takes the right presentation!

I am a behavioral specialist with 12 years of experience working with individuals between the ages of 2 and 19 who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Traumatic Brain Injury, emotional disturbance, Autism, Downs Syndrome, and other developmental disorders. This is what I love doing, and I have the patience to reteach in multiple ways over multiple days. Over the past 5 years I have taught English Language Arts to sixth graders, and tutored in all 6th grade subject areas while using positive reinforcement to enhance productivity. In September, I will be sitting for the certification exam to become a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). I believe that everyone can learn and everyone has their strengths. We just have to figure out how to let their inner scholar come out to play.

The most important thing about my teaching style is that I believe every child can achieve academic excellence and can be interested in learning. I believe that it is up to me, as a teacher or a tutor, to engage the student(s). A huge part of this is being very transparent about where the student starts, what our goals are for where they are going, and how they are doing along the way. I believe that teaching should be a collaborative process. The first step is to listen to the child and try to gain a sense of their own learning process. If you understand how the child learns, you will be better able to help him or her understand new concepts. I believe tutoring is invaluable in this regard, since it provides individual attention. Most classrooms are large, and ill-equipped to focus on each child's individual needs.
My tutoring began in high school, when I tutored younger students in any subject, from Math to English. I learned to love tutoring. I enjoy helping people to realize their full potential.
