Singapore/Common Core Math Instruction

Teaching math is much different than doing math. Although I have a Bachlors in Mathamatics from Northern Illinois University, my training from The Pi Group in Singapore Math Instruction is really what sets me apart. The U.S. ranks 25th in the world for Math Education. Singapore is consistently first or 2nd. Students build a deep understanding through the use of muniplulatives and pictorial representations. When students think they are "bad at math", it is usually an issue of the instruction they are receiving. I especially like working with students to chance this perception they have about math and themselves. I can also speak to my experiance working with children with ADHD.
Singapore Math moves from the concrete to pictoral to the abstract. Students develop understanding instead of rote memorization.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : I am currently teaching special education students at an elementary school.

Interactive modeling of examples, repetition, and simplifying subject matter are key components of my teaching style. Many students have difficulty relating to academic material due the lack being given time to practice example assignments. I also teach universal strategies of how to study material to fully understand assignments.
