Experience Summary
I have experience as a tutor at an international boarding school. I was a math tutor and helped students with the three levels of mathematics which are offered as subjects for the International Baccalaureate program: mathematical studies, standard and higher level mathematics. Due the variety of levels of mathematics which was taught at my high school, my experience as a tutor has helped me learn how to find different approaches to explaining the material. Working with students with different backgrounds in mathematics, answering their questions and helping them with a variety of problems has been a great way to master the material and to become comfortable with dealing with different levels of mathematics.
Over the last academic year I have been working as a volunteer for Project for Pride in Living in Saint Paul. I have been working with elementary school students to help them with school assignments as well as to improve their literacy skills. Our activities include reading, spelling, learning new vocabulary and elementary math. As a member of the Project for Pride in Living team I have participated in a training program which introduced us to different strategies and approaches to working with young students. This experience has been very beneficial for me, because it has helped me improve my teaching and develop new ones. I have learned how to be patient and to find creative ways to present the materials to the students which will be interesting for them and will keep them engaged in the work.
As part of my work study at Macalester College I will be working as a preceptor for Calculus II and as a tutor for Russian. My duties will include checking homework assignments, helping students with understanding the material and solving problems, answering their question and helping them prepare for tests and examinations.
