Experience Summary
As a teacher of piano, organ and voice, I specialize in beginning through intermediate level, and accept students of all ages. I also teach most styles, including jazz & pop. Theory and improvisation are text (method) based, since I believe it's crucial to have an intellectual comprehension of the principals of harmony, melody and form. Vocal coaching focuses on fun repertoire, interpretation, vocal production and confidence-building.
Top Subjects
Keyboard
Proficiency: Experienced, and one of my top Subjects!
I teach on Casio and Yamaha electronic keyboards. Many of my students have electric pianos. With the right features, they are every bit as good as an acoustic upright. If you are a purist and don't think modern technology offers an acceptable alternative to what some people call a "real piano," then by all means seek out a teacher with a grand piano. I taught for 8 years on a Baldwin grand at Belmont Academy and don't believe my students learned better or quicker by virtue of playing an expensive mechanical device.
Piano
Proficiency: Expert, and one of my top Subjects!
I've played the keys since I was 5. I'm now 60. That's a lot of experience! I have 2 degrees--one in church music (organ & voice) and one in music education K-6.
Vocals
Proficiency: Experienced, and one of my top Subjects!
I've led choirs in church since 1982 and have been training individuals since I was a staff instructor at Belmont Academy. Besides working as a vocal coach, I have also been hired as a public speaking tutor.
