Experience Summary
I've been a instructor for students preparing for the GED, now the TASC in New York State for over 10 years. My classroom experience exceeds 20 years. I specialize in reading and comprehension, test prep and essay writing. I'm a journalist by trade and write professionally, as well as helping students write for publication. I'm a graduate of Hunter College with a BA in English, with several minors including history, philosophy, women's studies and Black and Puerto Rican Studies. I also have a Masters in Journalism from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Specialty- Young Adults 17-24.
Top Subjects
GED
Proficiency: Experienced, and one of my top Subjects!
I have experience preparing young adults for the reading, writing parts I and II, social studies and science. I like to work with students 6 months in advance of taking the test, with discussion of the subjects, extra reading materials which i prepare in edition to the GED work books and practice test. I taught literacy skills for 10 years which included preparing elementary-continuing education students for a state and city exams in New York, know how to motive students.
Test Preparation

I have prepared students for the NYS English Language Assessment and reading exams for 3, 4th and 5th graders. I am also proficient in preparing students for the NYS math exams. I'm also proficient in preparing students for the GED exam.
Continuing Education
My continuing education experience includes working with adults ages 21-55 to build reading, writing and math skills for students with a 6 grade reading level to 8th grade reading level. I've been an instructor at New York City Technical College, Literacy Partners Inc., and for the City of New York. I'm an expert at building confidence levels and have been pretty successful with this group improving to enter the GED level.
Writing Skills
Proficiency: Experienced, and one of my top Subjects!
I prepare students with basics of sentence structure, paragraph structure and essay writing. I have students write topics based on their own experience first to get the words flowing and then build on other types or writing such as expository where a student is expected to study a topic such as social studies, science or literature and then write about it using research and facts.
Elementary Phonics
I have been trained in several phonics and reading programs including Spector Phonics and Wilson Reading. The phonics program helps with basic sound symbol association of the english alphabet in order to build words based on sound connection with the symbol or letter as opposed to rote memorization. I include a a word sight list for age or grade range.
