Students aged 5-7 use phonics quite a bit when learning to read. I begin with the short vowels and words that have one-to-one sound correspondence. Next come words that have the "silent e" because rules usually apply fairly regularly there. After that, we begin to learn words with more complex structures. In the meantime, however, the most common sight or "Dolch" words can be mixed in with the aforementioned because it's impossible for comprehension to take place without them.
