My most important quality for tutoring is a passion for education. I believe that good learning is based in appreciating the value of the subject matter, and when I teach I strive to make the material relevant to the student. Even students with great willpower do not learn very effectively when they are not interested in the material. I also teach with analogies and comparisons. People learn best by seeing similarities and differences between new concepts and concepts they are familiar with. Even the most difficult concepts can become clear when illuminated by good analogies and comparisons. I have done private tutoring at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, UT for almost three years teaching Spanish to the senior missionary couples and Mission Presidents and their wives. I have also volunteered to tutor at a number of different elementary schools in both Provo and Colorado tutoring at the kindergarten, 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. As a student at UofU and BYU I tutored and was tutored myself. While attending BYU I worked in the student advisement center part-time, mentoring and helping students develop their schedules, and tutored them in subject matter from courses I'd already completed. I served as a volunteer representative for the LDS church for two years in Denmark and Iceland. I speak fluent Danish and Norwegian, and I taught extensively on many topics to all age groups while over there. I earned my Degree at BYU-Idaho where I majored in Math and minored in Health. While in college I taught some lower level math classes. I went on to work at a year round school working with troubled teens. I was able to learn many different teaching strategies to work with different personalities.

I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it. I believe that the basis of learning is understanding the principles of the subject. If a student has a thorough knowledge of the basics, then he does not need to rely on root memorization or luck to pass classes. I believe teaching and learning the basics are far easier than simply attempting to pass a test or earn a decent grade. All subjects in the end build upon each other, a strong foundation helps not only with the current class, but with all future classes as well. Also, everyone has the ability to do well, and should be afraid of classes or subjects that are traditionally seen as dificult.
