Although instructors/tutors have a preferred teaching style, I will often mix in some elements of other styles. If I wish to take a more open approach to my teaching, I include a blend of various styles which is very effective. Teacher-centered, where the teacher is expert and authority in presenting information works well with students who need little direction from the instructor, and/or those who accept responsibility for their own learning. While in other situations, I will take a learner-centered approach thus viewing my role as more of a facilitator of student learning. I enjoy seeing students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and methods. I try to avoid lecturing, but have students come up with the methods of solving problems by themselves (with occasional hints or pointing in the right direction by me). I also emphasize problem solving and developing problem solving skills. One of my mentors taught me the mantra, "When you can solve one problems, you can solve hundreds just like it."
