A Little Bit About Me...

I have loved English since I was in middle school. I went to college with the desire to graduate with a degree in English Education, but realized (after almost three years in this program) that the education program at my school was completely disorganized. I decided to drop education and pursue a degree in solely English with a special interest in literature. I have also starred in two plays that my church put on- one that required only actions and another that had a multitude of lines and musical sections. As for Sign Language, I have an aunt who was born deaf. Because of that, I started learning simple signs before I could talk. I am by no means an interpreter, but I can carry on full conversations and aid in the tutoring of students who want to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

I usually like to meet with a person and understand their basic needs, before I decide which was to approach their tutoring - not every person learns the same way, so I approach each situation differently.
While attending Mary Baldwin College, I not only majored in English, but also worked as a tutor in the school writing center. As a tutor, I worked with students (freshmen-seniors) on basic editorial skills, correct punctuation, and the overall writing process (brainstorming, rough drafts, final copies, etc). However, my experience does not only tend to the college level - I have also worked with children in middle and high school for SAT prep, reading comprehension, and grammar.

I double-majored in biology in chemistry in undergrad, so the field of science and medicine is my first love and my strength. I have also received a Masters of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology, and have since completed my 2nd year of medical school. I have always had a strong affinity for math and english as well. Summer Reading/English Tutor

Fun! I try my best to make tutoring sessions interactive and engaging so that kids enjoy learning. I pick topics, books, vocabulary that is interesting to the student, when possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

Each student is different, so addressing how best to teach each one will vary. I have found that the key to helping language students learn is first finding what will motivate them to learn. Learning a new language opens up a whole new world to the student, one they have never known before. Building off of a student's extra-curricular interests- sports, music, art, fashion, or anything else- transforms learning a language from repeating verb charts to becoming more apt to pursuing his interests in an international way.
Upon graduation from school, I moved to Guatemala, where I was an English teacher to Spanish-speaking students for a year. While there, I was able to work on both my Spanish and teaching skills. I have since been able to help English speakers enhance their Spanish proficiency State-side. I am currently working on my Masters in Counseling.
