During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself being asked for help in classes I myself was taking. I never minded this, because being forced to explain something is the best way to ensure your own understanding of the concept. That is why I try to avoid directly answering questions my students ask me, instead dropping hints and asking questions of my own that guide the student to their own answer, in their own words.

Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! Orgo can really throw people for a loop if they don't understand why the reactions are working the way that they do. I help my students really understand the reactions, not just memorize them. Most students who are having trouble with Orgo 2 didn't really learn their Orgo 1 basic concepts.

I obtained my Master's Degree with the intent to teach. I did teach for 3 years at a small Junior College, then moved into industry. However, even while I was working in industry, I tutored several students over the years. Several of my previous students have gone on to Pharmacy School, three have acquired their PharmD degrees. Partcularly good at breaking down the main concepts of structure and bonding, resonance, acid-base chemistry, alkanes, cycloalkanes, functional groups, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions, alkenes and alkynes, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, and sulfides, as well as the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, including not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds.
