Teacher Who Can Teach Any Student!

I do not ever yell or scare my students into behaving the way I have seen many teachers do. With many students this does not work. I respect my students and in turn they respect me. This creates an atmosphere where students want to behave for me.
Taught in Greenwood and Greenville county schools 12 years. I taught reading recovery, resource, and self contained classrooms. Before that I was an ABA line therapist for students with autism. I have a degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Special Education. I am certified as a Elementary and Special Education teacher through the SC state Department of Education. I now own my own tutoring business Shining Stars Tutoring LLC.

Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! As a language therapist, my training and experience includes the Orton-Gillingham approach and Barton Reading. It is a joy to provide remediation with students with reading problems/dyslexia. To hear and see the progress of my students is always exciting!

As a tutor, I am able to present material and concepts to students in an easy-to-understand manner. Often, I look for ways to relate to students as individuals and connect the academic studies to their personal interests. I have a personable and upbeat teaching style while challenging, pacing, motivating, and holding students accountable for their learning progress.
My qualifications for teaching reading and dyslexia include use of the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Barton Reading System. With specific teaching methods, students who struggle with decoding, fluency, spelling, comprehension, and writing can be successfully helped to overcome these problems. Each student is provided individual lesson planning, according to his or her demonstrated strengths and weaknesses.

Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring as a young adult helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 and Creative Writing. I have worked with every age group from 6 weeks to 21 years old as a teacher, a behavioral therapist, and a tutor.
I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically interact with the materials, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as possible to aid their learning process. For older students such as my high school students or their college counterparts, I use more direct audial teaching and visual teaching styles. Every person learn ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I understand the challenges that come with dyslexia and how it can affect learning, especially in reading, writing, and processing information. Because of this, I am committed to adapting my teaching methods to fit each student’s individual needs, ensuring they have the support and strategies necessary to succeed. I tailor my approach by using multi-sensory techniques, such as incorporating visual aids, hands-on activities, audiobooks, and structured step-by-step instruction. I prioritize clarity, patience, and repetition to help reinforce learning in a way that works best for each student. Additionally, I break down complex material into smaller, manageable parts to reduce frustration and improve comprehension. My goal is to create a positive and encouraging learning environment where students with dyslexia can build confidence, develop effective strategies, and overcome academic challenges. I believe that with the right support and personalized instruction, every student can reach their full potential.

I will give your child my best effort

My primary aim in tutoring students is to assess exactly where they are academically, including reading level and math skills. Then I teach to their exact level. I help them to set up realistic goals and strive to meet those goals. Encouraging students and helping them to see their progress is a big part of their feeling satisfied that their efforts are showing dividends. I have worked with both the extremely bright, gifted students as well as those with learning disabilities so I understand the importance of proper pacing and the use of various modalities for successfully tutoring each individual.
I have always endeavored to excel academically and so sought after and received a top-level education at Duke University. My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Many students with dyslexia show remarkable improvement using the Academic Associates Reading Program.

I am am a certified Reading Instruction Specialist and former fourth grade teacher. Most students rise 2-4 grade levels in under 50 hours of instruction using the Academic Associates Reading Program. The Academic Associates curriculum is a 13 lesson brain-based phonics curriculum. One of my favorite success stories is a student I'll call Mark. After completing only 7 lessons, Mark went from a 1.9 reading level to a 3.5 reading level. Because of his previous struggles in reading, the school he attended planned to retain him in the second grade. After only 2 months of instruction, the school called his mother to let her know that he would not be retained because of the remarkable improvement in his reading. Learning to read properly not only helped improve his grade, but prevented his being held back. I fully believe everyone can learn to read well if given the proper tools to do so. C ... read more
