A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching chemistry in 1964. During my child-raising years, I did a lot of substitute teaching in various subjects, and worked at part-time and temporary classroom teaching and tutoring. My longest position was at University of Massachusetts, Lowell campus, (1993 through 2004, before moving to Florida), teaching 3 different levels of Freshman Chemistry. I have tutored chemistry, math, and biology in Florida since 2007, as an employee of Advanced Learning Center, St. Petersburg, until 2011, and independently to the present time. A major portion has been at Shorecrest Prep, St Petersburg, 2007 to now. I have met students at school, home, libraries and other public places. Before I started teaching, I engaged in cancer and space research.

My comments on tutoring Organic Chemistry : Expert at all Organic Chemistry concepts. Partcularly good at breaking down the main concepts of structure and bonding, resonance, acid-base chemistry, alkanes, cycloalkanes, functional groups, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions, alkenes and alkynes, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, and sulfides, as well as the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, including not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! Orgo can really throw people for a loop if they don't understand why the reactions are working the way that they do. I help my students really understand the reactions, not just memorize them. Most students who are having trouble with Orgo 2 didn't really learn their Orgo 1 basic concepts.

I obtained my Master's Degree with the intent to teach. I did teach for 3 years at a small Junior College, then moved into industry. However, even while I was working in industry, I tutored several students over the years. Several of my previous students have gone on to Pharmacy School, three have acquired their PharmD degrees. Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! I am a practicing Organic Chemist. I have terminal knowledge in the subject and have been consultant for corporations (publishing and pharmaceutical) and worked as full-time university faculty (CU, Mines, Princeton). Chemistry is work for me, however teaching chemistry is what I enjoy most. I think you will find it fun too, once the rules are actually explained to you. (Surprise! No one has or will explain it to you, not even your professor--see for yourself). I primarily tutor Organic and General so you can rest assured 100% accuracy and depth of understanding from a chemist, not just any science major. Don't risk your time and money on someone with barely a semester of experience more than you. It takes years of graduate organic education not experience tutoring or assistant teaching. To communicate the subject precisely at the level you need to ace your class and even your professor, you need someone who thinks like your professor. A tutor a with master's or PhD in another subject has the same experience of organic as an undergraduate. They will overcharge you to boot for being an expert in another field completely. Organic is unlike any other subject, even polymer chemists who do reactions and use organic chemicals all day have not done actual organic chemistry in years. I like to work one on one with students in a neutral location. Small groups are not out of the question however.
When I was studying engineering at University of Michigan, I took a job as a tutor at Washtenaw Community College. This was the most rewarding job I ever had. Since about the year 2000, I have been working as a freelance tutor in the subjects of math, chemistry and physics. I also tutor students in engineering courses. I generally work with college students or upper-class high school students. Normally I work in the Brighton/Howell Michigan area. I meet most students at a public library or coffee shop. My average rate is $50 per hour. This can be negotiated, however. I like to take the students ability to pay into consideration and will charge less per hour if advanced payment can be arranged.
