My comments on tutoring Portuguese: I lived in Brasil for a year studying the language and culture whilst living with brasilians and travelling the country.
I prefer the submersion approach. Listening to the language in movies, music, and also experiencing parts of the culture all help to learning a language. However, I also find vocabulary lists and verb conjugation charts helpful as well. Learning a language should be more fun than work though. I studied abroad in the northeast region of Brasil for a year studying the language and living with brasilians and learning their culture. I have travelled to many different parts of the country and have grasped a strong understanding of the country's culture as a whole while also finding the regional differences.
