I spent most of my college career teaching at IU Outdoor Adventures, Indiana University's outdoor recreation program. There, I gained the skills to instruct on rock climbing and backpacking. I believe that the teaching style I learned there pertains to teaching any subject. A teacher should guide the student to the answer, rather than giving it to them in an easy answer. I also worked as a Naturecrafts staff member at Camp Barney Medintz in Cleveland, GA. At CBM, I taught kids ages 8 to 16 outdoor skills and guided backpacking trips. Working there taught me how to best educate all ages in a fun and interactive manner. Whether it be playing a game or taking a walk, learning can be enjoyable. To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions.
