Tutoring requires a lot of planning. I need to look at your assigment before helping you. I do not charge for this time of looking at the assignment before our meeting. Based on what I read in your assignment, I get a general idea of how much time it will take for me to help you. I may also need to prepare some things on my end, such as installing the development tools needed to help you, making sure they work, etc. Consequently, unless I've been helping you for a while, a sudden request for help TODAY because you have an assignment due is likely to be refused. It's not that I do not want to help you, it's that I refuse to take money for not helping you. In other words, if I know that we will not succeed or that I will not be able to find the time to help you (because you did not schedule an appointment in advance), I will refuse. Given the above, it is in your best interest to schedule appointments BEFORE assignments are due. Just as you would not be able to see your doctor on demand, the same is true for tutors. I have other students. I have other work. Just like you, I plan my days, have events to attend, and have a life. If you do not make an appointment in advance (at least a day in advance), there is a good chance I cannot help you. I charge less than I am worth because it saves me time in seeking students to tutor. $25 per hour is a very low fee. I will not go below $25.00 per hour. I should charge about $40 per hour, but then I'd have to work (unpaid) seeking students to tutor. If $25.00 per hour is too much, then you probably should see if your university of college can provide you with free tutoring (some can). Unless I've been tutoring you for a while, the minimum session is 1 hour. I only offer smaller sessions to students that have become regulars. If I'm already comfortable with you and know your needs, I can sometimes help you in less than an hour. However, until that happens, I cannot help you in less than an hour. It is in your best interest, then, to build a relationship with your tutor by scheduling regular help. You will be better served if you do.

I have been working as a professional software engineer/programmer since 1984 and am still working in that capacity. Throughout this time I have also been a tutor. I began tutoring in college and continued this as a second source of income. I am very good at tutoring. I have also been an instructor in computer science, Visual Basic, Java, XML, and Excel at a college.
