Experience Summary

Math, Science, and Engineering Tutor June 2008-Present I tutored students in all levels of secondary mathematics from Algebra 1 through AP Calculus, Physics, and AP Physics. Regional Coordinator, National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering June 2002-June 2005 I developed scholarship programs and curriculum that resulted in millions of dollars in full scholarships for hundreds of students. Math and Science Teacher, The Rubicon Academy September 2002-June 2005 I taught mathematics, science, and robotics to middle school students. Engineering, Math, Physics, Space Science, Robotics, and CS Teacher September 1975-June 2002 I taught a multitude of subjects and projects including having students participating in robotics contests with Rice University students, launching experiments aboard two NASA space shuttle orbiters, created a Mars colonization project in collaboration with NASA.

Teaching Style

My specialty, however, is to develop curriculum and courses that meet the needs of students. I have created courses in a multitude of areas. Some highlights are: Drexel Prep: When I was a graduate student in electrical engineering at Drexel University, I found out that the minority enrollment was less than one tenth of one percent of Drexel. I joined a group of professors and volunteer students that developed projects for an after school engineering program. I also created a Saturday basketball program. The result of the programs helped result in a dramatic increase in minority enrollment. Rice Robotics: I found an opportunity to enroll students in Rice University’s Robotics Competitions at Rice University. The students competed against Rice students by creating and programming autonomous robots. The students competed very well at the competitions and opened the door to enrollment at Rice. Space Shuttle Projects: We developed experiments that were launched aboard two space shuttle orbiters (Columbia in 1980 and Discovery in 1986). Both were successful and provided valuable date that was analyzed by students. Mars Colonization Projects: I once attended a seminar on Mars at the University of Houston presented by NASA. I realized that Mars colonization provided an opportunity to think outside the Earth and yet reflect about living on Earth. This automatically became a multidisciplinary project. The first year, the students presented their findings to the NASA Mars Exploration Team. What was supposed to be a one-hour presentation expanded to a full day presentation with questions and answers. This was followed by a Regional NASA conference in which our students were formal presenters. In subsequent years, our students were invited to national seminars via NASA teleconferences. Recently, I completed an e-book on Mars.
