Experience Summary
Ph.D., Religion, Emory University (2013)
M.A., Theology, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2005)
B.A., History, Taylor University (2002)
My career as a tutor began when I was looking for a way to support myself during my graduate studies in the Boston area. After signing on with a local company, I discovered my passion for finding better ways to help students overcome difficulties and achieve their goals. I enjoyed the challenges of adapting content to the individual needs of each student, of pioneering new ways of communicating ideas, and of working closely with parents to ensure that my efforts were effective. Sensing the need for more structure, I later moved to Kaplan. In more recent years, I have tutored independently. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the work is sharing in the success of my clients. Students of mine have increased their cumulative SAT scores by as many as 400 points, and gained acceptance to institutions such as Berkeley, Boston College, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Emory, Georgia Tech, Princeton, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Wesleyan (CT), West Point, and many more.
Teaching Style
Each student has different needs and different learning styles. When I meet a student, I try to adapt to the each student's distinctive learning style. More generally, I engage students with the material by asking lots of questions designed to open up new ways of perceiving the material. Where possible, I try to make learning a multisensory experience, incorporating visualization of data, reading written work aloud, and listening for clues to the solution of a problem.
