Experience Summary
I have had a vast amount of tutoring experience with students of all subjects and ages. Although, Creative Writing is my passion and career choice, I have a love for many other subjects as well. I took enriched and honors courses during all of high school and I graduated an Honors Scholar. I majored in Creative Writing – Fiction from the writing school at the University of North Caroline at Wilmington making the Dean’s List six semesters in a row. I also took three semesters of Japanese and studied abroad in Japan for a year during my senior year. While in Japan, I learned all about the language and culture of Japan and tutored English to two elementary school students and a graduate school student who was studying for her final exam. She passed with flying colors.
A year after I graduated from college, I decided to go back to Japan, where I danced in a dance group called NEXT. They were an amazing dance team made up of different small groups of dancers of various styles such as hip hop, jazz, house, break dance, and others. No one could speak much English so I had to learn Japanese fast in order to communicate with them at a normal level. I also taught English in a night school for children and adults. I learned the most about the English language when I was teaching and needed to explain the rules and regulations of the English language that I had never really thought about before. I mean, explaining the difference between when to use “The” and when to use “A” is actually pretty difficult to do. While in Japan, I published my first novel, Airion: Return to Zire, in Summer of 2011 It was the first book of my debut series Airion written under the name J. S. Council. Book two, Airion: Light and Dawn, is set to be released in early fall of 2013. My eclectic interests and experiences in tutoring, teaching, traveling, and learning will make me a dynamic tutor and helpmate for any who needs it. Please feel free to contact me! I like to assess the student before choosing a teaching style. I understand that everyone learns differently so I try to find the best teaching style for the student to ensure success.
My Hobbies
I love to read and watch Japanese Anime, not only for the language practice but for the entertainment value. My mother is a vocal coach and taught me to sing from the age of 3. I started dancing when I was 6 and haven't stopped yet. I dance ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and I'm learning belly dance now. I draw when I can spare the time. Although I am a 'draw by sight' type of person, I am starting to draw more from memory. It is much harder for me. I love to read Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction. This is also the genre that I write.
