Experience Summary
I am proud to say that I have spent the last 9 years in public education as a teacher in a self-contained Speech & Language classroom. Throughout my 9 years, I have had the opportunity to work with many wonderful students, who I am happy to say have shown lots of success in my Speech & Language classroom. I enter the classroom with the belief that all children can be successful. Prior to entering public education, I worked as a Pre-K teaching assistant, homecare provider, one-to-one student aide, and camp counselor.
I became interested in education as an undergraduate student at Hunter College where my coursework and surroundings allowed me to explore multicultural and diverse learning. Following my undergraduate studies, I was proudly accepted into the New York City Teaching Fellows program. As a Teaching Fellow, I completed an intensive 2 year Master’s degree program, and graduated from the program with honors in 2006. To enhance my understanding of the bilingual student population I work with, I continued my studies in linguistics, ESOL and bilingual education at Mercy College and received an extension in Bilingual Education. In addition, I received certification in Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL).
The Teaching Fellows program also introduced me to my first public school teaching job as a bilingual special education teacher in the Bronx. It was this group of students who inspired me to continue my graduate studies in bilingual education. I am currently entering my 9th year as an elementary special education teacher in the speech and language program, and have now taught all grades K-5.
In addition to teaching, I stay involved in my school community and leadership departments. I have presented professional development courses including; The Magic 7: Quality Teaching for English Learners, Integrating Science & Social Studies with Reading & Writing Workshop, Writing Workshop Grades K-2. I also served as the Special Education grade chair for 2 years, and a special education teacher mentor.
