About Me

Experience Summary

My career path has winded around quite a bit but always focuses on computer science and math education. My education experience has included tutoring freelance, tutoring on USD's payroll, leading group study sessions, providing supplemental instruction for university coursework, leading workshops at a computer camp, writing workshops for that camp, and ultimately teaching math full time in a high school. My computer science field experience includes several part-time jobs, freelance web development, personal projects, an internship with NASA, and ultimately working full time as a Web developer.

Teaching Style

I prefer personal and small group teaching, but I can also do online tutoring with Webex. I like to get to know my students and their goals. I can help students set those goals, make plans, and achieve. I have lots of experience creating curriculum materials and lessons, and I try to find a real-life application to each lesson.

Subject Commentary

Algebra Proficiency: Expert
I taught Algebra 1 at an OPS high school for one year. I consider Algebra to be my specialty among all math subjects.
Algebra I This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I taught Algebra 1 at an OPS high school for one year. I consider Algebra to be my specialty among all math subjects.
Algebra II Proficiency: Expert
I taught Algebra 2 at an OPS high school for one year. I consider Algebra to be my specialty among all math subjects.
Algebra III Proficiency: Experienced
The contents of an Algebra III class vary school-to-school. I can help you identify the core concepts in your particular class, fill gaps from prior algebra courses, learn study skills specific to higher-level math, and more.
Calculus I Proficiency: Experienced
Calculus: Everything is slopes! This is where math becomes Serious with a capital S, and often the trouble with Calculus is prior knowledge gaps. Generally for Calc students, I function more as a study-buddy, letting the student guide the process and assisting more in the leaps of logic between the arithmetic, algebra, trig, and other prior coursework.
College Algebra Proficiency: Expert
I led Supplemental Instruction for College Algebra at The University of South Dakota for 1-1/2 year, providing group study sessions, homework help, extra tips, and additional instruction as necessary. I consider Algebra to be my specialty among all math subjects.
Computer Proficiency: Experienced
I have both formal and practical experience in computing. I consider myself an all-around computer whiz, and I can help you set and meet your goals for computer skills.
Computer Programming Proficiency: Expert
My specialty is front-end Web development, but I am also competent with several back-end and desktop languages. I can also help you understand the vocabulary of the field, read the documentation for your technologies, and search for help effectively. I have 2 years experience tutoring students in college level Java classes, and experience as a freelance tutor in Web technologies.
CSS This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
My specialty subject is front-end Web development, and CSS is one of my strongest languages. I can help you at any level from your very first web page to advanced topics, such as choosing better selectors, debugging cross-browser issues, using frameworks and resets like Normalize, precompilers like SASS or LESS, and much more.
Geometry Proficiency: Experienced
Geometry is a fun subject because of the hands-on applications and variety of visual/interactive lessons that can accompany the topics. I briefly taught high school geometry, and I can also work with college-level axiomatic proof-based geometry.
Homework Help Proficiency: Experienced
Homework and study skills are one of my strength areas. I can help you get the most out of your textbook resources, knowing when to ask the teacher for extra help, searching for online help effectively, creating study materials such as note cards, and generally setting up a study routine that works for you.
HTML Proficiency: Expert
I have been writing HTML for personal and professional projects since 1998. I am comfortable with HTML4, XHTML, HTML5, browser compatibility, separation of concerns (HTML v CSS), basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and more...
Javascript This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
My specialty is front-end Web development, and JavaScript is one of my strongest languages. I've worked off-and-on with JavaScript since 2001, and I can help you at any level from your first script to frameworks like jQuery to advanced plugins to complete JavaScript applications.
jquery Proficiency: Experienced
JavaScript is one of my strongest skills, and my framework of choice is jQuery.
Microsoft Excel Proficiency: Experienced
I have a custom-made curriculum for Excel 2010 Basics, which at it's shortest can be crammed into a 30-minute presentation. But it can also be expanded with hands-on activities, new custom lessons, help with your specific Excel needs, and more to customize the experience for your goals and schedule.
Microsoft PowerPoint Proficiency: Experienced
I am interested in creating a custom curriculum for PowerPoint 2010 Basics. For our sessions, I would charge my half-price discount rate of $20/hour and work closely with you to identify your specific PowerPoint goals and how to meet them.
PHP Proficiency: Expert
My specialty is front-end Web development, but when I work on the server, my language of choice is PHP. I have worked with PHP off-and-on since 2002, and I can help you at any level from your first script to frameworks like PEAR to platforms like WordPress to complete custom applications.
Pre-Algebra Proficiency: Experienced
The contents of a Pre-Algebra class vary school-to-school. I can help you identify the core concepts in your particular class, fill gaps in prior knowledge, learn study skills specific to algebra, and more.
Pre-Calculus Proficiency: Experienced
The contents of a Pre-Calculus class vary school-to-school. I can help you identify the core concepts in your particular class, fill gaps in prior knowledge, learn study skills specific to high-level math topics, and more. Pre-Calculus is often a survey and extension of multiple topic areas including algebra and trig, so in Pre-Calc generally we create lots of summary review and reference materials, while also showing a lot of detailed work that explains *why* topics are connected, not just *how* to do problems.
Statistics Proficiency: I know the basics
Statistics is a subject that does not typically get in-depth coverage in K-12 classrooms, and I can help students understand the importance of basic statistics and data analysis with both drill exercises and real-world projects like weather-tracking.
Study Skills Proficiency: Experienced
Homework and study skills are one of my strength areas. I can help you get the most out of your textbook resources, knowing when to ask the teacher for extra help, searching for online help effectively, creating study materials such as note cards, and generally setting up a study routine that works for you.
Trigonometry Proficiency: Experienced
Trigonometry is the in-depth analysis of triangle ratios, and the unfortunately reality is that most curricula is awful. Every aspect of Trig has a visual representation, and we should use it! Let me help you make the connections by animating the unit circle, illustrating identities, graphing functions, and more!
Typing Skills Proficiency: Expert
I have worked as a transcriptionist--these fingers fly. I can help you with touch typing, ergonomics, speed, and more. I know games that build basic skills and real-world exercises to enhance your technique.
