Experience Summary
Recently I have begun working as an American Sign Language instructor (adjunct professor) at a local community college and have been tutoring a variety of students outside of the classroom. In addition, I have been an interpreter for 5 years and have been signing for over 12 years. Originally, I learned ASL in Ohio and had to adjust to New Jersey regional signs. After deciding to become an interpreter, I attended classes at Union County College and Ocean County College. I am active in deaf coffee chats and meetups in northern and central New Jersey.
Teaching Style
I am flexible. Sign language can only be learned through repetition and practice, so there will be a lot of voice-off communication exchanges. Depending on the learning style of the student, I have several resources that can be incorporated into my lessons. Also, I prefer to know the goal of students to focus on specific vocabulary, if necessary, in effort to refrain from learning "extra" signs if becoming fluent in American Sign Language is not their goal.
My Hobbies
I enjoy dancing and reading books.
Other Comments
My current employer is a private school for special needs children. Everyday I am in contact with children with special needs, such as behavioral issues and autism, and enjoy teaching and using signs with them to communicate their wants and needs.
