About Me

Experience Summary

I have worked at Kumon Learning Center as a primary instructor for over a year, and have had ample experience in working with children of all ages in math and reading (teaching them the basic pronunciation of various letter sounds and words and basic mathematical concepts). I have tutored children of ages 5-12 at an English Center in Jinan, China for two weeks, and have tutored two transfer students in English on a weekly basis during my senior year in high school. I have also taught piano to adults on a volunteer basis for a month, and have had much experience in working with children in learning arts and crafts. As the vice president of Arts in Motion (a service club at our school)and a member of the Museum of Contemporary Art volunteer crew, I have worked with kids from ages 3-14 on various artistic projects. During high school, I was a member of the National Honor Society and have tutored various students in Algebra I, Algebra II, Chemistry, and Calculus. I am also the president of the National English Honor Society, and have worked with several students on improving their writing skills for standardized tests. I was born and raised in China and am completely fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Having attended Chinese classes for the past four years, I can teach children of any age beginners' Chinese.

Teaching Style

My lessons can range from private lessons to group lessons of no more than five at one time. I prefer to be very involved in my students' progress, and will readily explain any questions that they do not understand. My main strategy is basically to lay out the concepts that will be covered that day, go over several practice problems, and give three or four practice problems for the students to work on independently. For art students, I will demonstrate with explanation the concept that we will be covering in that lesson (be it portraiture basics or still life basics), draw diagrams with the steps clearly labeled, and have the student independently work on a similar piece which applies the same concepts. I will supervise the student's progress and correct any lasting errors, but I prefer to have the students produce an almost entirely independently produced piece each session.

My Hobbies

I enjoy playing the piano (and have done so competitively for 7 years), painting, drawing, pottery, and tennis.

Other Comments

Schedule of the lessons will be made with regards to convenience for the students and their parents.
