Experience Summary

Dr. Griffith Garland studied engineering physics as an undergraduate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, pioneering the program by being a member of the first class to graduate with that degree. She was twice a member of Who's Who Among American College and University Students and graduated summa cum laude. She put herself through college by tutoring students, working as a teaching assistant, and becoming the training manager at the University's computer lab. She went on to study geochemistry at Washington University in St. Louis, where she researched hydrothermal systems on Mars and their implications for life. While earning her Ph.D. at Washington University, she realized that some professors had difficulty conveying material to their students. She decided to be different and completed a Master's of Arts in Teaching, specializing in mathematics and sciences. After graduate school, Dr. Griffith Garland joined the United States Navy and served for over six years, mostly teaching nuclear physics and advanced mathematics to Naval nuclear personnel. Upon completing her extended tour, she decided that the best way to continue to serve was as a high school teacher, where she taught mathematics and sciences for seven years and acted as departmental chair and tutored many students in addition. She found the tutoring to be extremely rewarding and is now focusing her skills on individual students, their achievement, and success. Dr. Griffith Garland has worked in a wide range of environments with a wide range of students. She focuses on the individual needs of each student, whether they are 12 or 52. Each student can expect an individualized plan for success. Some students require intense work to catch up on material that has been missed. Other students may need only the occasional boost before a test or exam. Whatever the requirements, the student will receive the best help available at Charleston Math & Science Tutoring.
