Experience Summary
I have a masters degree in Enviornmental Biology and a BA in pre-med sciences. I also have an AA degree in Dietetics. My other hat is a long career in writing, editing, and publishing. So, I am a grammarian and have taught English composition.
I have been a substitute teacher for more than eight years in elementary, middle, and high school. During this time, I also have done private tutoring through the University of Nevada, usually one-on-one. However, with the after school programs, I have been group tutoring.
I also worked as a teacher of English as a Second Language for adults in the evening program of our local community college for three years.
Subjects tutored include math, biology, anatomy, and English.
Teaching Style
My style of tutoring is creative flexibility. I assess the student's learning style and try to adapt to that, using different senses (kinetic, aural, oral) to trigger best responses. However, this is layered over a basic multi-part structure suited to the subject.
I also like to set up a schedule of what our hour will be like, with some beginning exercises (usually recall from previous session). The rest of the hour would be structured with student input as much as possible. At the end, I like to introduce some free time to talk about the lesson and about any new ideas.
My Hobbies
My hobbies are painting, reading, traveling, and skiing.
