Experience Summary
My passion is helping struggling readers become successful. I know how difficult it is for learners who do not like to read. Struggling readers who do not like to read have common characteristics. The most dominate characteristic is that they avoid reading at all cost. They avoid it because they have come to think they are not good at it and cannot do it. Little do they know that everyone can learn to read. To get better at something you have to practice doing it. Reading is no exception. With a little guidance everyone can learn to read. My hope is not only that struggling learners learn to read but learn the joy and love of reading!
I am currently a licensed teacher who works with struggling readers. I have a K-12 reading license and a master’s degree in elementary education. My work experience includes helping students in elementary and middle school.
Teaching Style
My lessons are based on the most current reading research. Instruction starts with assessment. Students are assessed for their strengths and challenges. Each lesson plan is individually tailored to the student’s needs and interest. Instruction begins at student’s individual reading level and progress is continually monitored.
Students who are in early elementary grades typically are working on decoding skills. They are building their repertoire of decoding skills and each lesson incorporates higher level questions to develop student’s comprehension skills as well.
Older students who struggle typically know many decoding skills but fail to apply these skills in continuous text. They often struggle with comprehension as well. These students will not only work on decoding skills but comprehension strategies.
There are four powerful researched based comphrehension stratetegies students will learn to use; predict, summarize, question and clarify/monitor.
