Experience Summary
In the year of 2008, I decide to begin my adventure in education. I accepted a position as a math teacher at Red River Academy. a boarding school for teens with behavior issues and drug addictions. I taught 6th through 8th grade math there and helped mot of them improve by helping them gain confidence and showing them different strategies that could be used to solve mathematical problems. After helping many student improve int he classroom, I was offered a tutoring position by the tutoring company, Royal l Education, that held a contract with the school. After doing so for a bout a year, I became interested in going into the regular classroom to teach students who had the same issues as the student in the boarding school which included: ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, math deficiencies, and visually impaired. I accepted a position as an EDBD teacher at North Bayou Rapides Elementary and took the challenge. Since being here, I have helped students increase their test scores along with their behavior scores. For the last two years, I tutored LEAP test prep after school. Due to the cutting of funds, I will not be tutoring in that program this year, but I still want to help other kids.
Teaching Style
First, I like to determine a student's learning styles. Not all student learn the same. There are visual learners who learn by looking and writing. There are tactile learners who learn by doing and moving around (hands-on activities), then there are auditory learners who learn from hearing the information. I accommodate all styles int he classroom, but when tutoring, I assess the child by doing a learning style inventory which allows me to determine what style that particular child has. For visual learners, we use the basic paper and pencils, they watch me work. I model problem solving for them and then monitor them. For tactile learners, we pull out materials we can use our hands to work s with. For auditory learners, We have a discussion session before actual problem solving, I model problem solving while speaking and explaining in great detail what I am doing. All students will experience different strategies, but those relative to their learning style will be used the most.
