Experience Summary
Ten years ago, at just 14, I knew I had a calling to help others reach full potential in all aspects of their lives, and did something about it. At that time, I implemented a scheduled and drop-in tutoring program through my high school counseling center. This allowed my peers to take advantage of my assistance in all subjects. For the next 4 years I averaged 200 hours each school year tutoring, and continued that passion with summer elementary (K-6th grade) Title One Service-Learning student teaching.
Throughout high school and college, I tutored ESL after-school programs. I taught Alternative Middle and High School creative journal-writing classes, and spent time assisting in the college writing center. I taught and modeled skills including hygiene, cooking, money and time management, and decision-making. I volunteered with abused teen boys, probation, and middle
school counseling, offering assistance in personal and interpersonal
conflicts, decision-making, and relationships.
I also have experience in curriculum development and classroom management, including career and educational exploration. I continue to strive to learn how to best serve the diverse groups I work with.
Teaching Style
I believe in meeting each child at his/her current skill level and building confidence and concepts from there. Each student has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and learns at his/her own pace. Rather than expecting all students to understand a concept using one teaching style, I teach a lesson using multiple modalities followed by step-by-step tasks which reward successive approximations to a concept. The students who catch on quickly can use the time to build on their skills and expand upon the concepts, while I work more closely with students struggling with the concepts presented. I do this because I care, and believe academic success and personal confidence are key to life success.
