Experience Summary
As recent graduate of Carleton College (magna cum laude), my experiences in the diverse fields of English and Cognitive Science over the past four years have given me a deep appreciation and enthusiasm for the unique license afforded by a broad liberal arts education, as well as the desire to share that enthusiasm with others. My past work experiences as a Writing Consultant, ESL Tutor, Teaching Assistant, and Student Departmental Advisor have all presented me with opportunities to hone my human relations and interpersonal skills. My experience as a Student Departmental Advisor and Teaching assistant allowed me to act as an effective liaison between department faculty and individual students.
Teaching Style
I have enjoyed working closely with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities as a Writing Consultant, ESL tutor, and Teaching Assistant. I've had the pleasure of working with students who were puzzling over the minutiae of how to properly format a senior thesis to APA format and nervous freshman approaching their first English paper with trepidation. I am a firm believer that the job of a tutor is to work with the student, not with their texts or problems. Our motto at Carleton's "The Write Place" used to be, "We work with writers, not with their writing," and I believe this is the attitude any tutor should take towards the process of tutoring: student first.
