Experience Summary
I am 58 years old, raised 3 children while working as a legal secretary for 25 years. When my last boss retired, I decided to return to college and successfully graduated from DePaul University with a BA in Religious Studies Cum Laude with a minor in Classical Greek. The modern point to Religious Studies is not to teach religion, but where academics relegates Ancient History and ethics. Additionally, I have 3 years experience as an Interpreter for the Deaf for the University of Illinois' Architectural Dept. I am qualified and interested in mentoring/tutoring High School history and English and would love to assist where ever I can.
Teaching Style
I believe in mutual respect for intelligence and expect productive and active participation from the student in their pursuit. Depending on the student, I might engage them in an appropriate book about their topic, ask them to find a magazine/newspaper article, tell me a personal story to identify with what it is we are reading about. This would depend greatly on their assignment, writing/reading skills, and interest. I feel every high school student needs to feel their mentors are supportive and appreciate their efforts, so I work best when I feel I am a part of a larger team incorporating the student, their family and teacher.
