I prefer the submersion approach. Listening to the language in movies, music, and also experiencing parts of the culture all help to learning a language. However, I also find vocabulary lists and verb conjugation charts helpful as well. Learning a language should be more fun than work though. I studied abroad in the northeast region of Brasil for a year studying the language and living with brasilians and learning their culture.
