I wanted to also use my academic experience to tackle elementary level homework in general. I have been playing chess since 1980. My collection of chess literature exceeds 150 volumes. I brought 3 students to be my peer in chess. I have taught chess at Lindbergh, Randall, and West Middleton Elementary schools. I also teach chess at the public library (Pinney Branch). I learned chess very young but didn't start really getting into it until the first day of high school. My homeroom teacher had a chess board on his desk and asked me to play; I accepted his challenge and he then only took 4 moves to put me in checkmate. Three months later, i was finally able to beat him after heavy amounts of practice and lots of games with online opponents along with my fellow classmates. A couple months after that, with the same amount of practice, I could beat him without a problem. I constantly preach this anecdote because it shows that it doesn't matter where you start or how good you are at something, you can accomplish great things if you put your mind to it and practice, practice, practice! I earned a B.A. in English from Saint John's University in Minnesota and am working toward my Master's Degree in Education from De Paul University. I enjoy helping students work through tough problems by allowing them to make mistakes and then rework the problem a couple of times the correct way. Since this is my area of expertise, I am able to come up with examples on the fly that will target the areas most troublesome to the student. Mathematics is a field that requires repetition but making that repetition as interesting as possible is a fun challenge. I do not wish to be a teacher by profession but I do enjoy helping individuals or small groups with science and mathematics.
