I have been a Sign Language Interpreter for 20 years, as well as a mentor for other Interpreters I have had a great deal of experience as an interpreter, mentor and aide in the field of ASL and Deaf Studies. I have interpreted from Broadway to the k-12 settings. I have a great deal of experience in the deaf culture as well as the educational field. Building a good relationship with a child is key to helping them learn. When good relationships are developed children can then trust the teacher or tutor to help them in whatever way possible. This relationship builds a good emotional bank account and children will do hard things when asked. I know that all children can learn. I have seen it while working with the wonderful children at the school I worked at. I recently graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2011. I believe that the best way to learn is to have someone discover for themself or find a way to teach themselves the concept. That way, the knowledge will mean much more than if someone just tells them the answer, or tells the student how to do the problem. In tutoring, I help guide the child to what they need to be doing without giving them the answer or spelling it out too much for them. I also have a way of making learning hands-on and am a very visual person, so I will come up with visual representations to help the student learn better. As a former English major and editing minor at Brigham Young University I helped many students write and edit research and English papers. Along the way I also had the opportunity to edit an engineering Master's thesis. I have tutored in paper writing in various subjects as well as specifically tutoring in creative writing. I have worked with and on over thirty papers. I work very well one-on-one with students and am able to explain and teach what is necessary for better papers for the present and for the future. All of my students have received A grades on their papers. I am able to help students build their papers from the bottom up and go through completed papers and give assistance. Ever since I was introduced to American Sign Language (ASL), I have been deeply fascinated in the language and its speakers. A year after my initial experience with ASL, I decided to create my own Bachelor's Degree at the University of Utah. I was able to design curriculum pertaining to my desired field of interest. The classes I took were mostly education related. I had several classes in education psychology, multi-cultural education, diversity and culture. My major emphasis was on language and more specifically, deaf culture. Last Spring I tutored a family in their home in Park City.
