I adjust to the learner and speak their language, establish rapport through mutual respect, and try and make it as fun as possible. While I was a Rotary Exchange Student – South Africa | 1999-2000, I volunteered to tutor students of various ages every subject, except Afrikaans, and was very pleased with their progress, and enjoyed it. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success. During high school I interned in a first grade classroom for one year in which I planmed/taught lessons. I also have young siblings and family members which I help with assignments on a daily basis. In high school and college, part of the community service that I performed was tutoring elementary school kids in math. My BS in finance has given me ample experience and knowledge in the field as well as improved my math and reasoning skills. I know everyone learns in different ways, so I have found the best way to make someone understand is to put it in terms of something they understand, whether it be sports, chess, movies, anything. This allows them to relate to the material much faster and retain it much longer. Once they grasp the general concept, introducing details and new ideas becomes much easier.
