About Me

Experience Summary

My experience comes mostly from the school of hard knocks, and there was some really hard knocking going on! I grew up with ADHD. My parents knew, but never told me. My teachers and “friends” knew but never told me and hated me for it. I managed to survive, getting good grades, and graduating from College. I survived marriage (still am) and 2 kids (wow they’re different!) and the workplace too, making a very solid income for my family. All that, without any coaching or help, other than from loving parents who taught ME how to learn, and to love it. I also grew up with a Downs Syndrome brother, who taught me how to listen, and understand people different from myself, and how to love them. That’s my experience, and there’s plenty of it, but nothing with a fancy title. Sorry. Can’t offer you that.

Teaching Style

To me, learning is a part of LIFE, not a part of school. You can graduate from college and learn nothing, but you can go to a class you hate and learn a lot, if you WANT to. I’ll teach you to love to learn, and then we can get great grades as well, together! It isn’t teaching, it’s walking with someone to help them learn and understand. And it’s amazing to see the light go on inside someone when they start to love it!

My Hobbies

Mountains, and reading, and helping others. The helping part is the best, mountains next, and reading fills the gaps. :D

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
I have ADHD, maybe Aspergers, don't know. I grew up without knowing until I was 35, but my parents knew and kept it from me so I'd be "as normal as I could." Yeah, didn't work too well, but I still learned a LOT about learning - of necessity. And I am beyond patient. And I PERSONALLY don't buy into the idea that ADD / ADHD is a handicap. I feel it is a personality difference (long story) and that just as an artist or football player can be coached to "get along," so can someone with a gift like ADHD. I'll help "You" find YOUR way in the world, AND get fantastic grades. :D Why not do both?
Ballroom Dancing Proficiency: Experienced
Odd subject for tutoring, but maybe not in Utah. I was on the Ballroom backup tour team at BYU in Provo, before realizing that I didn't have quite enough to go the distance. Doesn't mean I can't do a lot, and doesn't mean I don't love it, just not good enough for college level competitive coaching. But I can get you WELL beyond just the basics, up to the point where you start to love it and pass me. :D
Basic Learning Skills
I don't know my proficiency here, but I know I HAD to learn how to learn, or I'd have failed out of school with my ADHD haunting me. As it was, I got a bachelors without any coaching, and averaged about 3.5-3.9 all through JHS, HS, and College. I think I can help others learn how to learn too. I hope!
Computer Proficiency: Experienced
Very vague area, but it's been my profession in some way or another for 25 years, so yeah, I understand computing a bit.
Reading Proficiency: Experienced
Everyone should be experience to expert in this if they want to get along in the world, and want to grow! I'm pretty passionate about this, but "expert?" Who has the audacity to call themselves an expert in a purely subjective field? If they do, they must be something... well, beyond me. heh. I don't teach speed reading though, other than the basics. Sorry mates.
Speaking Proficiency: Experienced
Speaking is the most feared subject for most people when they're young (me too!) but turns out to be a LOT of fun! I'm not a "trained professional," just happen to be really good at public speaking, training, teaching, and "stuff".
Special Education Proficiency: I know the basics
No training, but my brother had Downs Syndrome, and I have ADHD and a lot of patience. I love reaching those who are "left behind" for whatever reason. We should at least talk. I can't promise you some sort of advanced degree based study of the topic, but I have as big of a heart as anyone, endless patience, and an intense curiosity to understand others, no matter what. People with special needs are, well, special! :D And always in a good way!
SQL Proficiency: Experienced
MS SQL and DB2. I'm not "amazing" with either, but I'll get you up and running. BTW, my definition of "amazing" are the gods of SQL that dream about it at night. It's my full time job currently, and I've been using it for 15 years, but I'm smart enough with it to know that there are others out there that can run circles around me.
Typing Skills Proficiency: Experienced
About 85 WPM currently. I should brush up and speed up, but it's good enough for me. I can help.
Writing Skills This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
Ah - writing is so fun! The key is to not let all the rules get in the way of you saying what you want, and not letting laziness get in the way of making sure everyone else will READ what you want to say. I don't have a degree in it, but I love it more than just about anything else. So let's talk.
