Experience Summary
I have Dyslexia. As a child, I struggled to read until I was in the 6th grade. I continue to be challenged, as an adult, as a slow reader.
Despite all of this, I was able to graduate from college and graduate school with high honors. I know the challenges of Dyslexia. I became a teacher to help children learn to read.
In 2000, my husband and I opened 2 Sylvan Learning Centers, in Tullahoma and Cleveland, TN. . My goal was to help Dyslexic students. There was, however, nothing specifically for Dyslexic students in the Sylvan programs.
I studied at the Dyslexia Center in Murfreesboro and received certification through the International Dyslexia Association in England to open my own center specifically for students with Dyslexia. The center was successful in helping many students become successful readers. I have been able to go to many High School graduation of my, now successful, students. I am so proud of them.
After returning to Chattanooga in 2014, to help my dying mother, I found a position in a private school.
I,continue, to work with struggling students and adults. Struggling with reading has nothing to do with lack of intelligence. It is a brain processing difference, often seen in very creative people like Albert Einstein. Don't give up on your child.
Teaching Style
After testing a student, I design a program, specifically for his/her needs. I want to build confidence through practice and encouragement. We work in all areas of study. I visit the teachers, with parent's permission, to discuss current challenges and coordinate help for student needs.
My Hobbies
I am a working artist. My most valuable artwork, "Return" is in the White House. So, I also teach art.
