About Me

Experience Summary

I have a decade's worth of experience tutoring privately, as a volunteer, and as an employee. Part of my tutoring experience involved assisting teachers in a number of public schools, so I'm familiar with the school environment. I've also gained some experience in counseling troubled students. Tutoring is something that I thoroughly enjoy; students love my enthusiasm and I've been told by observers that I'm "genuine" compared to other tutors they've seen. I'm a very patient, laid-back tutor, but I have a "no nonsense" philosophy and an "Always exceed expectations!" attitude. Although my major is in Computer Science, I have interests in many other fields. I've earned a minor in Mathematics and I'm only a few application forms away from obtaining minors in Chemistry and Physics (I've completed the coursework, but I'm waiting for the application forms to be available). I've scored a maximum score of 5 (equivalent to an "A") on each of my AP exams in Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. I also have many textbooks of the high school and college levels that I use for preparation and review when needed, and that helps me to stay sharp and be as helpful to students as possible.

Teaching Style

I have a natural talent for identifying students' learning needs and I'm good at catering to those needs as soon as I recognize them. I've tutored hundreds of students from various backgrounds. I have plenty of experience working with children, adolescents, and even adult learners. I don't settle for simply teaching lessons. I emphasize study skills. I believe in every student's potential to learn and I teach them to become more independent with each tutoring session. I help students identify their own learning needs and show them how to find and use a variety of tools that help them become more self-sufficient.

Subject Commentary

Calculus I
Calculus is my favorite Math subject to teach! I like watching students react to the mind-blowingness of what Calculus enables them to do. I also like to illustrate the connection that Calculus has with technological applications such as screen resolution and digital sound. I've tutored countless times in Calculus. I've done so well teaching Calculus that a teacher once entrusted me with the task of teaching a two-day lesson to his entire class! I can also help high school students prepare for the AP Calculus exam if needed.
Calculus II
See the information provided under Calculus I.
Chemistry
Chemistry is my strongest science subject. I have a very intuitive understanding of Chemistry and I try to help students develop a similar intuition. I teach Chemistry through the use of analogies and mnemonics. I also put an emphasis on approaching Chemistry problems strategically and recognizing useful patterns. I do offer "Backyard Chemistry" sessions, where we can perform safe experiments with cheap materials (provided by the student) for a change of pace from textbook Chemistry for those who are interested. I can help with all levels of middle school or high school Chemistry (including AP Chemistry), and I can also help with early college level Chemistry.
Geometry
I had a hard time with Geometry in high school; I got good grades in it, but I didn't feel like I was mastering the material. My understanding of Geometry eventually improved as I started using it in Physics and Calculus, and now I have a thorough understanding of students' struggles with this subject. Geometry became one of my most popular subjects when I was tutoring in public schools. I've learned to help students see confusing figures more clearly through the use of a white board and a wide range of colors that help students recognize and focus on the important parts of Geometry problems. When teaching Geometry, I firmly believe that "Color equals emphasis!" and I often apply this rule to other subjects as well.
Physics
I teach all levels of middle school and high school Physics. I also teach certain levels of college Physics, but you'll have to tell me your exact needs through messaging to determine the extent to which I can help you. Physics requires a strong background in Math, especially in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Physics also requires a great deal of problem solving; the best way to learn it is to solve many problems and encounter as many situations as possible. With some scrap wood and a tool shed, a more hands-on approach to Physics may also be a viable option.
Pre-Calculus
Pre-Calculus is a subject that emphasizes essential concepts from Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry in preparation for Calculus. It's a subject that I've taught mostly through reviewing forgotten concepts for Calculus students. I've only had a handful of actual Pre-Calculus students, but I'm certainly capable of teaching the material. In teaching Pre-Calculus, I try to focus on the concepts that will be most helpful in Calculus. I also like to encourage students to try more challenging Pre-Calculus problems, because it truly does make a difference for them when they get into Calculus.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is often introduced along with Geometry or as a part of Pre-Calculus. I've ended up teaching Trigonometry to a lot of my Geometry students in the past. In teaching Trigonometry, I focus on developing mnemonics in order to improve retention of important equations. I also like to emphasize the importance of illustrating Trigonometry problems in detailed pictures to help students reach solutions.
