Experience Summary
I have worked as a freelance math tutor throughout high school and my college years, as well as working as a regular tutor with Barnette Magnet School in Fairbanks, AK. I was an active member of my school's Academic Decathlon team, with a focus on mathematics, economics, and public speaking, and returned to help coach the team after graduation. I have experience teaching and tutoring elementary math up through Calculus III at the college level, with preference on introductions to algebra and calculus fundamentals. I am currently pursuing a degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics, with the goal of becoming a High School Math Teacher.
Teaching Style
I prefer to start with fundamentals and work with students to help them gain an understanding of the work they are doing. Memorizing formulas and following a step-by-step "recipe" approach to math is often extremely difficult and frustrating to students. I find that practicing a "puzzle-solving" approach helps them gain insight into why they are performing certain operations and helps them be more enthusiastic about math in general.
