Experience Summary
I have been a private tutor for the past two years. In that time I helped a student who had dropped out of high school learn all of the necessary skills required to excel at the new GED test. He achieved honors on the Math and Science portions and scored very well on the Reasoning through the Language Arts and Social Studies sections. In October I helped him study for his ACT. He scored a 23 on the ACT and with his GED-High School Equivalent GPA of 4.0 he was accepted to New Mexico State University and plans to obtain a Masters in International Relations.
Teaching Style
I adapt my style to whatever suits the student the best. I will work hard to help the student relate to the material in a personal way, so that it is meaningful to them rather than simple memorization. My goal is to help the person become an independent and critical thinker; skills that are not generally taught, but are crucial for their future success. I then search for a passion, and then use that passion to teach any other subjects they may be deficient in. Each student requires a different approach at different times. Sometimes a documentary will be the best way to convey an idea or find something that may excite them. Pouring over texts and solving hundreds of math problems will not help someone *CARE* about what they are learning, or help them understand *WHY* it is important that they know something.
My Hobbies
I read science fiction, and I write some as well. I enjoy hiking, video games, and I am passionate about learning new things myself.
Other Comments
Since I continue to broaden my own horizons, I am eager to learn from my student's as well. Sometimes the best way to learn is to teach. Over time, my teaching methods will encourage them to learn more on their own; I want them to be able to learn independently.
